Employees from Statistical Office have counted 1.93 million flats last year in Berlin, 0.8 percent more than a year earlier. That's the the current message. And yet the lack grows. Through the construction of new homes last year, 12,814 apartments were created, nearly 3,000 more through "construction work on existing buildings." But that is not enough, because the city last year also grew, rising by nearly 30,000 people from other countries and through the birth surplus. Adding the accumulated 70,000 homes which are already required over years up to that - and that's a benevolent estimate, because it comes from the Senate, which is responsible for the housing shortage.
The count of new buildings fail to come up to expectations. "Poor" is the balance sheet, "especially in the low cost housing that are most needed in the city." Not only 20,000 additional homes are required annually, but also the "in the right segment for people with low and middle incomes" - so for 7.50 to 8 euros net cold.
